Become a Hero

Blizzard Entertainment’s next big title, Overwatch, has finally entered its open beta stage. Overwatch is a casual, team-oriented, third person shooter.

However, the game adds a spin to the usual formula by adding in MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena) elements, such as having a roster of characters with unique stories and abilities that are tailored to each of these characters in addition to their weapons.

The characters are divided into four different play styles, attackers, defenders, tanks and supports, allowing players to… Well, attack, defend, tank or support.

I’ve learned a few very important things in my time with Overwatch so far. The most important thing I noticed was that no character was being played more than another. The game is incredibly well balanced. There is no set of heros that are the “best” to play.

My favorite character by far is Genji, a cyborg ninja with great damage and high mobility.

Genji is fast and his burst is incredible, and his dash ability combined with his double jump make it so easy to get behind the enemy and assassinate the squishier heroes. But Genji isn’t viable in every game, so I had to turn to a few other characters in order to secure victory.

My go-to character after Genji was Reinhardt, a big, old guy in a massive suit of armor. He uses his giant hammer and shield to defend his teammates in battle. He’s a classic tank. He’s built for taking damage and saving allies.

I played most of the other heroes as well, but none of them had the lasting power of Genji and Reinhardt, but make no mistake, every hero in this game is an absolute blast to play.

With such diverse ways to accomplish the same task, Overwatch offers an enjoyable experience for pretty much any gamer.
