Go to Hell

The much anticipated reboot of the classic first person shooter/horror, DOOM, has finally arrived, and it has soared past any possible expectations.

Players take control of the DOOM marine, the man who got trapped in Hell and tore the place to pieces, until he was locked away by the demon horde. This guy is so hardcore he went back into Hell three times over the course of the game. Three times!!!

Freed from his stone prison, the DOOM marine is once again tasked with tearing through the ranks of Hell's armies as he works to unravel the mystery of what happened on the Hell energy refinement facility on Mars and close the Hell portal that has opened there.

The story is minimal in its presentation, meaning that there are very few cutscenes or lines of dialogue to explain the story, which is fine. The majority of the events and lore in the DOOM universe are explained through text logs that can be found throughout each level.

The main thing that is clear from the beginning is that Hell has reared its ugly head again and it’s the player’s job to stomp it into the dirt. This kind of simple, straightforward story fits DOOM perfectly. It tells the story without disrupting the fast and incredible combat.

Fast paced run and gun action is the core of the combat, and it's one of the most satisfying feelings I have ever experienced. There is truly no word that can express the sensation one feels after mowing down a group of demons with a shotgun and then punching off the head of another demon with an incredible soundtrack playing.

Each gun has mods that are available, which are attachments that can be upgraded as the player’s progress. It’s a good addition and makes the game a little more varied.

The cornerstone of the combat is how the player moves. The DOOM marine is faster than any in the game and on top of that, he can jump and climb ledges. The combat focuses on constant movement, running and strafing to avoid and deal damage effectively.

“For years I always thought Portal 2 was the only perfect game, but after playing DOOM, I realized I was wrong,” junior Jonathan Baffo said.

DOOM has been one of the greatest experiences in recent years, and it promises to be an amazing reboot of a classic series.
